If you've ever been through a city and spotted tiny cell towers for 5G on street light poles. They look like small boxes, but they're actually broadcasting wireless signals from cell phone providers to your mobile.

These smaller towers are replacing the larger, purpose-built cell towers. While they're not as noticeable however, they could cause problems for people.

The FCC's Radiation Exposure Thresholds determine the maximum amount of time an individual can be exposed to electromagnetic energy generated by wireless devices. The limits of exposure are based upon scientific research which prove that electromagnetic energy could cause harm to health.


The rate of absorption called the specific absorption rate (SAR) is an indication of the radiofrequency energy that is taken up by tissues. It's usually 1.6 watts per kilogram, calculated over one gram of tissue.

But, since 5g operates at higher frequencies, it has the potential to create more energy on the skin and other exposed body parts. This can lead to various potential problems, including an increased appearance of skin disorders like dermatitis, cancer of the skin and cataracts.

Because of the potentially harmful effects of radiation from 5G, PSU has chosen to establish a general, localized maximum power density of four MW/cm2 based on the average on 1cm2, and never to exceed 30 minutes, for all 5G services at 3000 GHz. This localized limit is in accordance with the peak spatial-average SAR of 1.6 W/kg, averaged over one g of tissue at 6 GHz.

If you've ever used a mobile phone, you probably know that a safe distance from the tower should be at least 400 meters away. This is due to the power of the transmission of a cell tower increases dramatically the further away the tower is.

Although this may sound like something that's good however, people who live close to towers may actually be more prone to health issues. For example, a study from 2014 in India found that those living within 50 meters of cell towers experienced much more health problems than those living further away from the antennas.

This study revealed that those who relocated to areas that were further from the cell towers saw their symptoms improve within a few days. Studies have also shown that exposure to high levels of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) could cause cancer, brain tumors as well as other health issues.

This is due to the fact that the RF radiation used in wireless communication can be absorbed by the body's outer layer, called the skin.  5g radiation  is vital to be aware of because the skin acts as a shield against mechanical injury, infection caused by pathogenic microorganisms and the entry of harmful substances. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and is responsible for keeping the integrity of other organs.

The FCC's Minimum Exposition Thresholds are based upon various assumptions that aren't supported by scientific research. This includes the false belief that short-term exposures RF radiations are not harmful due to the limited absorption into body (i.e. thermal heating of tissue).

This also overlooks the more extensive penetration of ELF components of modulated RF signals, as well as the effect on the body of short bursts generated by RF waves that are pulsed. These theories are not compatible with the current understanding of biological consequences of RF radiation, and thus they shouldn't be considered for health protection exposure guidelines.

Additionally to that, ICNIRP and FCC restrict its maximum levels of radiation exposure for local peak SARs based on the peak spatial specific absorption rate (psSAR) which is an inadequate dosimetric tool for determining the level of radiation exposure. Particularly the psSAR tool is not accurate for frequencies that exceed 6 GHz. Additionally, psSAR hasn't been tested for  cell phone radiation  exposed to other environmental agents , such like sunlight. Interactions of RF radiation with other environmental agents could result in antagonistic or synergistic impacts. This can lead to the risk of having adverse health consequences. For example, co-exposure to RF radiation along with exposure to sunlight can increase the risk of developing skin cancer and exacerbate other skin disorders, such as acne.
